What is continuum? Continuum (theory), anything that goes through a gradual transition from one condition, to a different condition, without any abrupt changes or “discontinuities”. This is the definition by Wikipedia. Why it is so important? Because it explains how to reach a target in doing anything. In al-Quran, it is fulled with codes that need to be decoded. Decoding process needs a good set of knowledge either theoretically or empirically. The West is good in characterizing any behavior or deed in term of continuum. Should Muslims come up with continuum?
Yes. Because the earth was created in stages. This is stated in Surah as-Sajadah. Thus we need to have the mentality of climbing ladder or what we call – stages. Gradual, stage-by-stage thinking will empower our mind and habit to try and reach any targeted behavior in our life.
For instance, in order to achieve the level of taqwa in fasting, Imam Ghazali has developed so-called fasting continuum. First stage – awaam or general. Second stage – khusoos or special. Third stage – khawasal khusoos or special of special. At this stage, one has the potential to be in taqwa.
Since it is clear to see that continuum by past scholar, why not we come up with other set in the future? Let’s dig the pearl in Quran and Hadith.
